Loons are often present when I swim or kayak in Maine’s clear lake waters, bravely fishing only a few feet away - accustomed to humans sharing their place. Living only a block from Megunticook River I sometimes hear their rich calling. I am among those who feel a strong protective love for these vulnerable birds who live so closely among us and whose numbers teeter on the edge of concern. For me they are The wild spirit of Maine. Painting them was inevitable, and challenging.
